It’s been roughly a month and a half since I re-embarked on this mad adventure known as webcomicing (I’m deeply disappointed that this neologism, one that I and I’m certain many others have been using since the turn of the century, is still not a recognized word by my word processing software. I suppose there are worse things to befall the world, though), and in many ways it’s like catching up with an old friend you haven’t seen since graduation. You were close, but drifted apart, and you find to both of your surprise that you’re able to pick up right from where you left off without missing a beat. It’s odd, and in a way bittersweet, but overall quite nice.
On that point, I had another bittersweet thought. People my age, who graduated from high school before the web was omnipresent, may very well be the last generation for whom a high school reunion meant anything. Now it’s trivial to keep track of people, and often you can’t get away from them. Hell, you don’t have to wait ten years to see if that person you disliked made a mess of their life, you can just spy on them and feel comfortably superior from the shadows.
Speaking of ten years…
I hadn’t really drawn much in the last decade, or at least not this consistently, so producing this feature is like trying to run a 5k straight from the couch (someone ought to really make an exercise program out of that idea, it could catch on). I still very much feel as though I’m in the warm up phase, trying to find what works and what doesn’t in terms of format and execution. At the very least I want to spruce up the site a bit, give it a little more than the barebones home/cast/me/archive pages it has now, and maybe give it a slightly more modern look. Up until now I’ve been entirely focused on finding a groove for completing the actual content the site is built around, and I think I’m getting there, however gradually. I even have a sort of theme song in the works.
Based on the hard data I have access to due to the sorcery of analytics, I have evidence that there are in fact people visiting this site and reading this who are not me. I hope you’re enjoying it so far. These first pages were mainly to establish characters, setting and plot (such as they all are), so from here on I expect things to be “happening” with greater alacrity. With all that said, a “”””long form”””” comic like this is better enjoyed in binges (also known in modern parlance as “Netflixing“) so I see this as a “Build it and they will come” scenario.
On that point, I’ve been toying with the idea of introducing a “Single Serving Smith” feature, that is to say, single shot one off punch line driven comics ideal for that quick burst of ha-ha. Perhaps after the new year. I’ll be sure to keep you posted on the Twitter and Facebook and maybe even directly here as well.
